List of Projects to date
The following is a list of UPSTART projects that will take place this year along with those that have already taken place since the start of the programme in 2010.
Carrowbeg Artists Collective, artist Orla Casey and the Custom House Studios, Westport.
The Artist’s Space.
ha Virtual Reality Collaboration which will involve a process that transforms the participants imagery and experience from printmaking and drawings into virtual reality culminating in shix 3 – 5 minute-long virtual reality spaces reflective of each individual artist.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder (Our personal perceptions)
A series of mixed media arts workshops involving photography, creative writing, the development of mixed media studies, including interactive and sensory art pieces resulting in an exhibition on 3 December.
Luisne Art Group, Ballinrobe and artist Breda Murphy.
Light Through Our Dreams.
This group of established artists will develope a ceramic art installation based on shadow and light culminating in an exhibition to be launched on 5th December.
Newport Resource Centre and artists Henri Hedou, Aisling Flynn, Inga Teterovska and Brid Kivneen.
A project in which participants based at Newport Day service explore themes of bereavement and loss through a series of workshops in clay modelling, print, paper, collage and paint. It is invisaged that there will be no public event associated with this project at the moment.

‘The Pottertastic Project.’
An experiential project facilitated by artist Henri Hedou involving a series of pottery workshops throughout the autumn with participants based at Silverlodge and Primrose Day Services. It is invisaged that there will be no public event associated with this project at the moment.

Ceramic Art Project is a series of Ceramic arts workshops facilitated by artist Henri Hedou culminating in an exhibition of work to be launched on 3rd December.
Carrowbeg Artists Collective, international DJ Christopher Ceo and the Custom House Studios, Westport.
A project using music and rhythm as a form of self expression. Participants from the Carrowbeg Artists Collective, Westport colaborated with international DJ Christopher Ceo and the Custom House Studios in the development of a piece of sound art, using music and rhythms sampled into a musical / sound composition which culminated in a cohesive and contained art-work.
Down Syndrome Mayo, Castlebar and artist Anne Connolly.
The Hero’s Journey
Artist Anne Connolly worked with members of Down Syndrome Mayo in the development of an artwork through a series of creative workshops using drama, movement, improvisation, sound, creative writing, painting and mask making.

Our World View (Through the Looking Glass)
A visual art printmaking project. Ballina Arts Centre hosted a series of visual arts workshops that explored different aspects and styles of printmaking with members of the Ridgepool Training Centre, Ballina. Under the guidance of artist Claire Griffin, the group developed a body of work which was displayed throughout different businesses in Ballina This project formed Mayo County council’s UPSTART 2018/Creative Ireland project.
Scannán Tecnologies, Ballina, artist Helen Falconer and Ballina Library.
Words Into Community
A series of creative writing workshops facilitated by artist Helen Falconer and hosted by Ballina Library with service users from the Scannán Tecnologies group. The project explored the group’s view of the society in which they live by putting into words their feelings and reflections. The group produced a body of work with a contribution from each individual.
St Bríds school, Castlebar, artists Thomas Johnston & Orla Kelly from Ceol Connected and the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.
A Winter Wish at the Quiet Tree
A multi-sensory music and theatre performance developed by Thomas Johnston & Orla Kelly. The Linenhall presented two performances for groups of children with intellectual disabilities from St Bríd’s School, Castlebar, on Friday 7th December 2018. Ceol Connected also developed workshops to introduce the characters, thematic elements, and music in the show to the children in their school setting.
Ballyhaunis and Claremorris day service and percussionist Anthony McNamee.
using drums and percussion instruments, percussionist Anthony McNamee facilitated a series of introductry percussion workshops with service users from the Ballyhaunis and claremorris day service. The workshops culminated in a performance of a work in progress in Claremorris Town Hall.
Carrowbeg Artists collective, Westport, Custom House Studios, Westport, artists Caroline Masterson, Gráinne O’Reilly and chef, Áine Maguire, ‘Food as Art.’ A cookery book and exhibition.
Participants from Carrowbeg Enterprises worked with chef Aine Maguire and artists Caroline Masterson and Gráinne O’Reilly to create an art/cookery book. Images based on photographs of ingredients and cooking, using drawing and printmaking tecniques . FOOD AS ART culminated in a Cookery Book with the Artist’s representations of each recipe. The book formed part of the Custom House End of Year exhibition which took place in December 2017.
Crann Mór Centre, Ballinrobe and percussionist Anthony McNamee.
Service users from the Crann Mor centre, Ballinrobe participated on a series of introductry drumming workshops facilitated by percussionist Anthony McNamee. Anthony has extensive experience of working with people with disabilities by designing percussion workshops to allow for total inclusion by all. The workshops culminated in the performance of a work in progress at the Christmas Concert at Ballinrobe racecourse.
Down Syndrome Mayo, Castlebar, Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar and Blue Teapot Theatre Company, Galway, ‘Sanctuary’ film screening, post show discussion plus drama workshops.
A drama engagement programme with Blue Teapot theatre company beginning with a screening of the award winning film “Sanctuary” Following the screning, members of Down Syndrome Mayo participated on an eight week series of drama workshops at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, facilitated by Blue Teapot team member Danielle McDonnell. The workshops focused on character development, body language, and the use of sound to create effects. The final workshop will consider these various elements in relation to the film ‘Sanctuary’ in an active / hands-on way.
Rural Training Centre, Castlebar and artist Con Murphy, The
The Ukulele & Me.’ skills development workshops plus performance.
Artist Con Murphy facilitated a series of music workshops with service users from the rural Training Centre, Castlebar. Participants developed music skills by learning the rudiments of the Ukulele. The workshops culminated in A performance of a work in progress at the rural Training Centre’s christmas Craft Fair in mid December 2017.

Stained glass workshops plus presentation.
Service Users from Western Care Erris participated in a series of stain glass workshops facilitated by artist Gabrielle Bishop. The workshops culminated in the creation of a set of stained glass panels to be on perminant display at the Western Care Centre, Erris.
